The Impact of Microplastics on Human Health

Microplastics are quietly infiltrating our lives and bodies! Recently, the TVBS program T Viewpoint aired an episode titled “You Think I’m Made of Plastic!” that delved into the potential threats microplastics pose to human health. Research has found that microplastics may accumulate in the brain, liver, kidneys, and other organs, with concentrations in the brains of dementia patients being several times higher than in healthy individuals. In addition, exposure to high levels of microplastics has been linked to chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and stroke, and may interfere with hormones and metabolism, increasing the risks of obesity and cardiovascular disease.
The program also introduced the latest scientific discovery—marine fungi capable of degrading plastics—which not only show great potential in environmental remediation but could also be applied to future drug development. In addition, it showcased “ocean cleaning robots” that can efficiently remove marine debris, enabling ocean waste recycling and turning trash into valuable resources.
